 Tracing your ancestry has become enormously popular and more and more records are now accessible to help answer that key question - Who are my ancestors?
- Gone are the days when genealogy (frequently mis-spelled 'geneology') research in the UK meant poring over crumbling parish registers in damp vestries.
- Thanks to the work of many individuals and organisations, and to the Internet, information from a wide range of sources is more accessible now than it has ever been.
However, there are some pitfalls:
- Secondary sources – such as other people’s family trees, and all indexes and transcripts – need to be treated with caution, and original sources need to be consulted where possible.
- Experience may be necessary to navigate through the wealth of information that is now available.
- If the surname is a common one - and some names that seem unusual can still be common in a particular area - it is easy to go astray and follow the wrong family line.
- There are still many important records which are not indexed or available online.
Our research is carried out by a network of experienced and specialised researchers, who will use a combination of new and old skills and sources, to ensure that your ancestry is traced accurately and efficiently.
How will the results be presented?
The results are presented in a coherent and attractive report, accompanied by a detailed family tree that summarises all the information. Copies of documents, and a full list of sources examined, are also included.
Further copies of reports and family trees can be ordered for other family members and make popular gifts.

How much will your ancestry research cost?
Every case is different, and no genealogist can predict how many generations of any given family can be discovered, so our fees are based on the length of time we spend on research.
Our research is conducted within a fixed budget which is paid in advance or by monthly instalments. We continue our research until we reach the end of the budget, and we then send you our report. If further research can be recommended, we will make specific suggestions at the end of our report.
Standard Ancestry Research Programme
For the majority of cases we recommend our Standard Programme, which usually takes between three and six months to complete.
As a very rough guide, if your earliest known ancestor was born around 1900 in England, Wales or Scotland, we would expect to trace back perhaps three generations within this programme; in some cases we might find more and in others less.
Our Standard Programme is essential for any research involving sources outside the UK or if the ancestor was an early emigrant to America. The Standard Programme costs £500 or US $850.
Limited Ancestry Research Programme
We also offer a Limited Programme, which, as the name suggests, is a shorter programme of ancestor research. Our Limited Programme is not applicable for cases involving research outside the UK or where research is likely to be complex. The Limited Programme costs £295 or US $540 and usually takes between two and four months to complete.
Tailoring your ancestry research programme
We recommend that we concentrate on a single surname line within each programme.
We can of course carry out more than one programme concurrently: for example, you might like ancestry research on your father’s and mother’s lines.
Unless directed otherwise, our priority will be to take the family as far back in time as we can in the time allowed. If you have particular interests in addition to this, please let us know at the outset.
